Davidson Housing Coalition - Souper Bowl:

Saturday, January 31

Join the Davidson Housing Coalition at the annual Souper Bowl event to be held on Saturday, January 31 from 11:00am-1:30pm in the Lilly Family Gallery. At this fundraising event, you can enjoy delicious soups for the soup cook-off from local Davidson restaurants, and enjoy live entertainment from the Delilahs, the Generals, and many more! The cost to attend this event is $10 for Adults, $8 for Students (12 & up), and $5 for Children. Tickets may be purchased at the door. All proceeds raised from the Souper Bowl benefit the Davidson Housing Coalition, a nonprofit established in 1996. DHC serves to work with the larger community to create and preserve affordable housing options and to prepare families and individuals for financial stability and homeownership.

King Day for Kids Volunteers:

Monday, January 19

The annual King Day for Kids event is in need of energetic and passionate volunteers who love working with local area youth. The event will be held on Monday, January 19 from 9am-11am in the Alvarez Student Union Atrium, and is focused on literacy, social justice, and community engagement. Area youth grades Kindergarten through 5th will take part in small group readings, arts and crafts, storytelling, and personal expressions of their dream. Volunteers will have the opportunity to either lead small groups of youth in the day’s activities, or help with event logistics. Your commitment will be on the day of the event as well as a brief volunteer training on Sunday, January 18. There is no class scheduled for Monday, January 19, so class should not conflict. Davidson Housing Coalition - Souper Bowl Volunteers:

Saturday, January 31

Davidson Housing Coalition’s annual Souper Bowl event will be held on Saturday, January 31 from 11:00am-1:30pm in the Lilly Family Gallery. This event features a cook-off of delicious soups from local Davidson restaurants along with live entertainment from the Delilahs, the Generals, and many more! Volunteers are needed between the hours of 10:00am-2:00pm for a variety of roles to help make this event a success. Interested volunteers should contact Kyle Goodfellow, Tien Le or Monica Nelson

Mexico Alternative Spring Break Opportunity:

Saturday, February 28 - Friday, March 6

Travel to the center of the Yucatan peninsula to serve at the “Mayan Children’s Village” where students get access to high school and middle school that is not possible in their home villages. This is part of a long running partnership with Acción Ministries. The group will continue building their dining hall and fellowship with team members. The trip will be from Saturday, February 28 to Friday, March 6 to a safe part of Mexico in the Yucatan. The group will also see ruins and a historic city. Contact Professor Rich Neidinger who is leading the trip organized by First Presbyterian Church, Charlotte soon if interested. A deposit on the $1200 cost is requested by Monday, December 15.

 

Help Tell Stories of Powerful Service Experiences:

Friday, December 19

The Center for Civic Engagement is looking for 2-3 students to be part of a research team that will help write profiles/tell the stories of individuals who have received summer service immersion grants through the Center for Civic Engagement. You will take part in interviews with already-identified individuals and then draft profiles to be shared on the website and in other media. Excellent writing skills required. MusicalMinds After-School Program:

Classes Resume: Monday, January 26

MusicalMinds is a holistic, after-school program that is changing the lives of children through music education in Mecklenburg County. The program focuses on at-risk children and employs classical, orchestral music instruction to bring about social change.  Musical Minds is seeking program volunteers at Blythe Elementary in Huntersville Monday through Thursday, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  Volunteers are also needed to assist with research, marketing, social media/ website management, grant research/writing and fundraising.  Contact: Tim Huber or Holly Cummings for more information!

 

Cornelius & Huntersville Parks & Recreation - Angel Care:

Third Saturday of each month

AngelCare is a program that offers a parent’s night out to support local families that have a child with special needs. The program is designed to allow the parents to drop off their child with special needs and their siblings for a 3-hour time block on the third Saturday of each month. During these 3 hours, volunteers play games; participate in arts and crafts, and other fun activities with their buddy. This program also offers various athletic programs on the weekends including a flag football and spirit squad league, and a basketball league starting in January. MURDOCK Study Volunteer Program:

The MURDOCK Study is a community-based health study operated by Duke Medicine in Kannapolis. The study is seeking to develop a better understanding of health and disease by investigating the chronic medical conditions that most significantly impact our society. Volunteers will be asked to assist with a variety of study functions, while gaining exposure to the clinical research setting. Opportunities exist for both a structured, semester-long volunteer program and more intermittent volunteer commitments. Responsibilities include: planning and attending community events, recruiting study participants, preparing clinical materials, and assisting with marketing efforts. Davidson College Advising Corps:

The Davidson College Advising Corps program seeks applications for full-time college advisers starting in Summer 2015. In partnership with the National College Advising Corps (CAC), Davidson College is proud to host a CAC program through the generosity of the John M. Belk Endowment. The CAC places well trained, college graduates from institutions of higher education as full-time advisers in under-resourced high schools in western North Carolina to support students as they navigate the complex processes of college admission and matriculation. These "near peer" advisers collaborate with teachers and administrators to tie college-going into the life of a school, devise creative approaches to reach and connect with students, and most importantly, open the eyes of students and their families to the possibility of college. During 2015-16 the program will expand from 9 advisers 20. Positions are full-time, 2-year terms beginning in August with training held in the month of July at Davidson.

 

Cam Newton Foundation Spring 2015 Internship:

The Cam Newton Foundation is committed to enhancing the lives of young people by addressing their socioeconomic, educational, and physical and emotional needs. This Intern will be responsible within the areas of: management of charitable donation requests – including autographed item requests, appearance requests, funding requests, etc.; assisting with fan mail; assisting with special events; interacting and communicating with foundation partners – including schools and other nonprofits; creating and writing website and social media content, and planning and developing events and programs. Catawba Lands Conservancy/Carolina Thread Trail Communications Intern:

The Catawba Lands Conservancy is dedicated to saving land and connecting lives to nature in North Carolina’s Southern Piedmont. The Carolina Thread Trail is a 15-county, two-state regional network of trails, greenways and blueways that link more than 2.3 million citizens. The Intern will assist with and handle a variety of tasks and responsibilities for Catawba Lands Conservancy (CLC) and Carolina Thread Trail (CTT) working under the direction of the Marketing Director. The Intern's responsibilities will include: writing content newsletters and press releases, monitor and tracking placement of news articles, updating media lists, maintaining and editing the website and social media channels, maintaining accurate information for printed materials, distributing promotion material, coordinating promotions and other community marketing partnerships and covering special events as well as community events. The Duke Endowment Fellowship Program:

The Duke Endowment is currently accepting applications for the 2015-2017 Fellowship Program. The Fellowship is a two-year, full-time position for those who aspire to be leaders in the philanthropic or nonprofit sector. The Endowment is looking for applicants who have demonstrated an interest in the nonprofit sector and exhibited leadership potential in their civic and/or professional lives. Candidacy requirements include being a past or current resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, or a graduate of a college or university located in North Carolina or South Carolina, have one to two years of work experience after obtaining an undergraduate degree, and/or have a graduate degree. Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated interest in the nonprofit sector. Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Fellowship & Internship Program:

Applications Due: Monday, January 5

The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all North Carolinians by building an inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant state. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $350 million to statewide, regional, and community-based organizations in all 100 counties in North Carolina. ZSR is looking for college students and recent graduates interested in philanthropy, public policy, community service and/or the nonprofit sector. Positions that are available include the ZSR Fellowship, a two-year, full-time position for recent college graduates, the ZSR Internship, a paid research-intensive summer internship for current students, and the Non-Profit Internship Program. The Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellowship:

The Congressional Hunger Center is a nonprofit, bipartisan organization that fights hunger by developing leaders. They are currently recruiting for the 22nd Class of Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellows Program, a unique leadership development opportunity for motivated individuals seeking to make a difference in the struggle to eliminate hunger and poverty. Each year 16-20 participants are selected from across the country for this year long program. Fellows are placed for half the year with urban and rural community organization all over the U.S. involved in fighting hunger at the local level. The Fellows then move to Washington D.C. to complete the program with work at government agencies, advocacy groups, and public policy organizations engaged in anti-hunger and anti-poverty work at the national level. Venture for America is a 2-year fellowship program for recent grads that want to learn how to build a business while making an impact. VFA Fellows get training and join a startup in an emerging U.S. city, where they learn hands-on what it takes to build a company and become a successful entrepreneur. Mayo Clinic Vann Fellowships for Biomedical Ethics Research:

Applications Due: Monday, January 12

The Vann Fellowship is a component of Mayo Clinic’s Summer Program in Biomedical Ethics, which sponsors 3-6 students each year. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor to work on a particular research project for the summer. In addition, students will participate in a biomedical ethics summer curriculum, which includes educational sessions on bioethics research methods and lunch meetings with members of the program faculty. With appropriate permissions, students may be given the opportunity to shadow physicians or clinical ethics consultations. Applications are due no later than noon on Monday, January 12, 2015, to Dr. David Perry, Director of the Vann Center for Ethics. Autry Fellowship:

The Autry Fellowship is a competitive fellowship program for talented and ambitious recent college graduates. It provides an opportunity to work for one year as a full-time, paid staff member at MDC. The Autry Fellowship supports the mission of MDC – to help organizations and communities in the South close the gaps that separate people from opportunity – by developing a cadre of young leaders who have experience promoting economic development, increasing equity and excellence in education, building inclusive civic cultures, and who are poised and ready to apply their new learning to benefit the region. Human Rights Watch Internship:

Applications Due: Monday, February 12

Human Rights Watch is an independent nonprofit organization respected throughout the world for the quality of its research and the power of its advocacy work. Human Rights Watch is offering two nine-week internship opportunities in the summer of 2015 (late May-July), to work in either New York or Washington, DC. Placements may include HRW’s Children’s Rights division, Asia division, Advocacy division, or Refugees’ Rights Program. Depending on students’ skills and interests, work may include press monitoring, desk research, drafting short background documents and correspondence, and other projects as needed. These internships offer $5,000 stipends funded through the Vann Center for Ethics. Interns are responsible for arranging their own housing and travel however. To apply send a cover letter explaining your interest in the internship, a one-page CV, and a 5-page paper, ideally on a topic relevant to human rights. The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award:

Applications Due: Monday, January 19

The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides a $15,000 stipend to a graduating college senior to pursue public service anywhere in the world. The Award allows recipients to engage in meaningful public service activity for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career. Students are encouraged to develop their own proposals for public service in the U.S. or abroad. The proposal may encompass any activity that furthers the public good. It can be undertaken by the student alone or working through established charitable, religious, educational, governmental, or other public service organizations. View past award winners here. Projects for Peace Grant:

Applications Due: Friday, January 30

Projects for Peace is an initiative for students to design grassroots projects for the summer of 2015 – anywhere in the world – which promote peace and address the root causes of conflict among parties. The deadline to apply for the $10,000 grant through Projects for Peace is Friday, January 30 at 5:00pm. Davidson students or groups of students can apply for this opportunity. Projects must be enacted during summer 2015. Projects for Peace encourage student initiative, innovation and entrepreneurship focusing on conflict prevention, resolution or reconciliation. International Sustainability Projects:

Applications Due: Friday, February 20

The Dean Rusk International Studies Program and the Office of Sustainability invite proposals for projects that develop innovative responses to pressing sustainability challenges abroad. The purpose of these International Sustainability Projects is to give pairs of students the opportunity to engage with a community outside of the United States, identify a sustainability question, and work cross-culturally to find a solution. Center for Civic Engagement Summer Grants:

Applications Due: Friday, February 27

Grant proposals for Center for Civic Engagement Summer Grants for both domestic and international projects are due on Friday, February 27 at 5:00pm to Kyle Goodfellow. Updated information about grants available and proposal requirements will be made available on the Center for Civic Engagement websitein the coming weeks.
